The 74th Anniversary of International Credit Union Day (ICU).
Credit Unions in Ghana joined the World in celebrating the International Credit Union Day on Saturday 22nd October 2022 at the Ho Technical University in the Volta Region on the theme ‘Empower your Financial Future with a Credit Union’.
The Celebration begun with a float through the principal street of Ho. The aim of the float was to create awareness of the existence of Credit Unions in the Country.
The float led us to converge at Ho Technical University auditorium where we had various speakers addressing the gathering.
Mr. Doh Redacord the Volta Chapter Chairman welcomed the presence of all participants to the Volta Region of Ghana. He further spoke on the theme for this year’s International Credit Union Day Celebration which is ‘Empower your Financial Future with a Credit Union’ which he thinks for individual or group of persons to sustain tomorrow they must ensure to save today. He continues by saying since the future is unknown, however, those who prepare for it are able to withstand the shocks.
Dr. Bernard B.B. Bingab the Credit Union Association Board Chairman and Vice Chairman of ACCOSCA, the continental body in his remark notified that the celebration is to help reflect upon the Credit Union Movement’s history, promote its achievements, recognize the hard work and share member experiences. He also mentioned on the importance of Credit Union which offers opportunities for savings, competitive credit and other financial services tailored to address the needs of members.
Mr. Cyprian K.A. Basing the General Manager for Ghana Co-operative Credit Union Association also mentioned that this year’s International Credit Union Day Celebration is to raise awareness of the great work Credit Unions in Ghana are doing particularly the impact on human development. He further expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders for their trust in the movement and for their presence and support.
Mr. Kwabena Apraku Yeboah the Acting Registrar-Department of Co-operative in his address at the 74th ICU Day celebration hosted at Ho, mentioned on the essence of the day’s celebration which is to create awareness around the world which will help the Credit Union family grow. He also spoke on the theme for this year’s celebration which is to Empower your Financial Future with a Credit Union’ where the empower is linked to ensuring your customers are satisfied, members are retaining and committed to their Union. Empowering helps brings out the best in people he therefore urged all Unions to ensure they empower their members.
Hon. Bright Wireko-Brobby is the Member of Parliament for the Hemang Lower Denkyira Constituency in the Central Region and the Deputy Minister for Employment and Labour Relations was the special guest of honour for the celebration. In his remark he mentioned that we need to support Credit Unions with a suitable environment which will lead to a positive impact on Cooperatives and help create more jobs in our society. He again emphasized on the importance of Credit Union which is not profit oriented and also has lower interest rates which will help secure better future for its customers. He ended by urging more individuals to join a Credit Union and enjoy its amazing benefits.
Torgbega Ayim Adzokoto II addressed the participant of the 74th ICU Day Celebration by first welcoming them to the Volta Region and also spoke on who a member of a Credit Union is. He defines a member as one who has the interest of the Union at heart and also one who shares his financial institution ownership and vision. In his community, he says Credit Unions have helped eliminate poverty, created enabling environment for everyone to access loans to sustain and improve their lives. He ended by urging everyone to join a Credit Union and enjoy the benefits it offers.
Hon. Ignatius B. Awuah the Sector Minister and Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa Volta Regional Minister were in attendance to grace the occasion.
Some Staff and Participant were awarded for participating in the riddle contest that was shared on Ghana Cooperative Credit Unions Association Facebook page. Some of the awardees were Dr. Solomon Nyarko Owusu, the Volta Lake Cooperative Credit Union and Mr. Eric from the Eastern Chapter.
The Batton for the 75th International Credit Union Day Celebration was passed to the Eastern Chapter.
